The Victoria's Smile Foundation is currently raising funds in support of the Leukemia research being conducted by Dr. Mark A. Weiss, M.D.
"Dr. Weiss was Victoria's doctor during her initial treatment. He helped us understand the disease and what we needed to do to beat it. After going through Dr. Weiss's treatment
Victoria was in remission from Leukemia. Unfortunately Victoria had a rare form of Leukemia that made it necessary for her to undergo further treatments. It was complications from
these treatments that took her life. It is the mission of all those that loved Victoria to raise funds for the research of Dr. Weiss and Doctor's like him who are trying to find
safer cures for Leukemia." -- Michael Mazzucca, Victoria's Husband, Foundation President and Founder
Dr. Weiss is currently an Associate Member at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center where he has been an active clinical investigator on the Leukemia Service since 1990. His
research activity has focused on developing new, more effective treatment regimens for adults with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). In ALL
he has extensively studied a new high-dose chemotherapy regimen based on the principle of inducing rapid remissions and is currently leading a randomized multi-center trial studying
the effectiveness of this new induction therapy compared to more traditional treatments. He is also developing new treatment methods for CLL based on the principle of combining non
cross resistant agents in an attempt to develop curative regimens for this disease. In collaboration with other investigators, Dr. Weiss is utilizing molecular techniques including
PCR to study minimal residual disease in CLL and gene chip analysis to study biologic variability in CLL and to attempt to identify predictors of response to chemotherapy.

Randomized Trial of Two Therapies for Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia Finds Survival Advantage
ORLANDO, May 16, 2005 - A prospective, randomized trial comparing a novel regimen with a standard treatment for adult patients with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) showed a distinct
advantage that continued to show superior results at three-, four-, and five-year intervals in the investigational arm of the trial.
